      Reflections In A Western River

Poems & Essays by Richard W. Mack

Reflections cover
The sweep and swell of the western landscape writes its own history, but the rivers whisper the story. To look into the waters of a flowing river is to look into the eyes of mystery located at those fixed points where present time is trapped in reflection as a stationary image. So it is with the West and memories. Time, in irresistible urgency, moves on without us, but memories, with irreplaceable yearnings, stay.

This book is for those who know these waters of the West. It is for those who have stood on the banks of some western river and who have left some part of the mystery of their life reflected there.

Rocking Chair

watching the moths

woo the electric death

of the streetlight

he sat each night

in the rocking chair

on the screened in porch

sharing cold milk

from a quart jar

with his cat

afghan over his knees

worn gray socks

covering thin ankles

shirt buttoned

tight to his neck

never warm

even on hot summer nights

he checked

the gold watch often

though he seldom

remembered to wind it

memories churned

by the measured

rocking of the chair

we could never

see him clearly

through the screen

never knew if

he scoffed

or smiled

never knew his dreams

and only the cat

knows when

the rocking stopped
